Merav Israel speaks to us about the Feldenkrais Method, what it is and how it came to be in her life.
FELDENKRAIS for MOVING WELL and LIVING WELL
Not everyone is familiar with the Feldenkrais Method® - can you tell us a little about it?
Feldenkrais Method® was invented by a scientist called Moshe Feldenkrais. Moshe, born in 1904, understood neuroplasticity well ahead of his time. Moshe’s main tools were movement and awareness. This style of research differs from nowadays neuroscientists, who are mostly engaged in experimentation and writing about the brain's functionality.
Part of the genius invention of Moshe Feldenkrais was to construct movement lessons. His lessons would create the conditions and the experiments needed for learning. Through sensing, feeling, thinking and imagining we awaken our potential for learning. Together, with some important strategies embedded in these movement sequences, these lessons create a clever method and opportunity for learning and improving.
You have a background in professional dance - how has the Feldenkrais Method® benefited you?
From my personal experience as a dancer I quickly came to realise how much this practice helps me with my movement. I found that it gives the most profound experience of being present in the body. I found that this method also shows me how to be in the here and now in the most spacious and concrete way possible.
Therefore, I see it as a journey of discovery. I also see the Feldenkrais Method® as a way to be in the dancing body, the moving body and the creative body. It is a way to tap into the sensitive and awakened body, and get closer to the full potential of self.
We are so focused on results. I found that though The Feldenkrais Method® offers results and lasting results at that. The Feldenkrais Method® also offers a practice to experience and dive into every moment anew. It feels so good to be on the journey that each lesson offers.
What can we look forward to getting involved in with you and the Feldenkrais Method?
I am developing a way to apply the method to movement practices in dance and yoga. Additionally, I am offering a new workshop “Feldenkrais into yoga” with the intention to develop this approach further over time. This style of class is also a way to deepen your knowledge and understanding of dance and yoga.
